Traffic signs make up approximately 40% of the Dallah computer test — around 14 out of 35 questions. This means you can score 14 points just from signs alone. Most people who fail the test do so because they underestimate how many sign questions appear.
The good news is that traffic signs follow a clear system. Once you understand the four categories and what each shape and colour means, you can work out the meaning of many signs you have never seen before.
Of the 35 questions in the real Dallah computer test, around 14 are about traffic signs. Master the signs and you are nearly halfway to passing before you start on the rules section.
Saudi Arabia follows the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, which it acceded to in 2022. All road signs are classified into four categories. Learn the category first — the shape and colour tells you what the sign is about before you even read it.
Alert you to hazards or changes in road conditions ahead. Always triangular with a red border on white.
Tell you what is prohibited or the maximum/minimum limits. Circular with a red border, or the red STOP octagon.
Tell you what you must do — direction, minimum speed, lane to use. Blue circles with white symbols.
Directions, distances, services. Usually rectangular — green for highways, blue for services.
Warning signs are the most common signs you will see on Saudi roads. They are always a white triangle with a red border and a black symbol inside showing the specific hazard ahead.
Regulatory signs tell you what is legally required or prohibited. They are circular with a red border, or in the case of STOP, a red octagon. Ignoring a regulatory sign is a traffic violation.
The STOP sign (red octagon) requires a complete stop. The Give Way sign (inverted triangle) means yield but you do not have to fully stop if the road is clear. This distinction is frequently tested in the Dallah computer test.
Mandatory signs tell you what you must do — they are instructions, not suggestions. They are blue circles with white symbols. Failing to follow a mandatory sign is a traffic violation.
Guide signs provide directions, distances, and service information. They are rectangular and do not carry legal obligations — they are informational only.
The most effective way to memorise Saudi traffic signs is to learn by category first, then by individual sign. Here is the system:
| If you see this shape/colour | Category | Your action |
|---|---|---|
| Red triangle | Warning | Slow down — hazard ahead |
| Red circle with number | Speed limit (max) | Do not exceed this speed |
| Red circle with symbol | Prohibition | This action is forbidden |
| Red octagon | STOP | Come to a complete stop |
| Inverted triangle (point down) | Give Way | Yield to other traffic |
| Blue circle with number | Minimum speed | Drive at least this speed |
| Blue circle with arrow/symbol | Mandatory instruction | You must follow this |
| Yellow/orange diamond | Priority road | You have right of way |
| Green rectangle | Highway guide | Information — destination/exit |
| Blue rectangle with P | Parking available | Car park or parking area ahead |
